The book of Hebrews conveys a double dose of spiritual power. It not only presents the greatness of Christ in ways no other New Testament writing does, but it repeatedly demands a heart response from the reader. No one can study Hebrews and not grow spiritually and come face to face in a new way with Christ.

GENTLE CHALLENGE TO SUSTAINED ENDURANCE (V. 7A) To begin with, the truth of the Proverbs passage elicits a command: “Endure hardship as discipline” (v. 7a). Jesus endured (v. 2), and it is imperative that we endure. The word “discipline” comes from a root word generally meaning “to teach or instruct as one would a child” (cf. Acts 22:3; 1 Timothy 1:20; Titus 2:12). Often it means “to correct or punish”—as it means here (cf. v. 10; Luke 23:16, 22). Broadly, it signifies much of what
